PTI gets another seat in NA

Dr Imran Khattak of PTI officially declared winner in NA-5

ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Monday notified Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Imran Khattak, a close relative of Chief Minister Pervaiz Khattak, as the returned candidate from NA-5 (Nowshera-I).

Imran pocketed 70,053 votes while his closest rival was Awami National Party’s Muhammad Daud Khattak, who bagged 21,435 votes. The result was stayed following complaints from some of his rivals that irregularities occurred during the electoral process in the constituency and the most significant was the charge that female voters in thousands were barred from casting their votes.

A committee was formed under the concerned district returning officer to investigate the charge and in his report he said not a single female voter was stopped from voting.Following the report, Daud Khattak visited the Election Commission of Pakistan the other day and filed a petition and a copy of thumb impressions of nearly 2,500 female voters, who he claimed were not allowed to cast their votes on the election day.

A senior ECP official said that ANP candidate’s contention was that the result should be notified only after a decision was made on his petition. He has also filed a petition in the Peshawar High Court. “His petition has not been put aside: it will be looked into and be processed accordingly.”
