Calorie burner: How much better is standing up than sitting?

The Queen and two footballers stand
Studies have claimed major health benefits for standing for much of the day as opposed to sitting. The difference is marked, explains Michael Mosley.
Guess how many hours a day you spend sitting? Fewer than eight? More than 10? A recent survey found that many of us spend up to 12 hours a day sitting on our bottoms looking at computers or watching television. If you throw in the seven hours we spend sleeping then that adds up to a remarkable 19 hours a day being sedentary.
Sitting down as much as this is clearly bad for us and some studies suggest that those who sit all day live around two years less than those who are more active. Most of us are guilty of excess sitting. We sit at work, in the car and at home, moving only to shift from one seat to another.
Even if you exercise on a regular basis that may not be enough. There is mounting evidence that exercise will not undo the damage done by prolonged sitting. Our technology has made us the most sedentary humans in history.

Glucose is an essential fuel but persistently high levels increase your risk of diabetes and heart disease. Your pancreas produces the hormone insulin to help get your glucose levels back down to normal, but how efficiently your body does that is affected by how physically active you are

We wanted to see what would happen if we took a group of people who normally spend their day sitting in an office and ask them to spend a few hours a day on their feet instead.
Standing while you are working may seem rather odd, but it is a practice with a long tradition. Winston Churchill wrote while working at a special standing desk, as did Ernest Hemingway and Benjamin Franklin.
So with Dr John Buckley and a team of researchers from the University of Chester we conducted a simple experiment. We asked 10 people who work at an estate agents to stand for at least three hours a day for a week.
Soldier's legs on parade
Our lucky volunteers had mixed feelings about how they would get on.
"It'll be different, but looking forward to it, yes…"
"I think my feet might hurt - I'll have to wear sensible shoes…"
"The small of my back, it's going to hurt…"
"I'm worried that I'm not going to be able to stand up for all that time…[Laughs nervously]"
We asked all the volunteers to wear an accelerometer - a movement monitor - to record just how much moving about they were doing. They also wore heart rate monitors and had glucose monitors that measured their blood sugar levels constantly, day and night.
New York City marathon finishing lineThe equivalent of 10 marathons a year?
The evidence that standing up is good for you goes back to at least the 1950s when a study was done comparing bus conductors (who stand) with bus drivers (who don't). This study, published in the Lancet, showed that the bus conductors had around half the risk of developing heart disease of the bus drivers.
Since then prolonged sitting has not only been linked to problems with blood glucose control, but also a sharp reduction in the activity of an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down blood fats and makes them available as a fuel to the muscles. This reduction in enzyme activity leads to raised levels of triglycerides and fats in the blood, increasing the risk of heart disease.
They did. One woman with arthritis even found that standing actually improved her symptoms.
The Chester researchers took measurements on days when the volunteers stood, and when they sat around. When they looked at the data there were some striking differences. As we had hoped, blood glucose levels fell back to normal levels after a meal far more quickly on the days when the volunteers stood than when they sat.
There was also evidence, from the heart rate monitors that they were wearing, that by standing they were burning more calories.
"If we look at the heart rates," John Buckley explains, "we can see they are quite a lot higher actually - on average around 10 beats per minute higher and that makes a difference of about 0.7 of a calorie per minute."
Now that doesn't sound like much, but it adds up to about 50 calories an hour. If you stand for three hours a day for five days that's around 750 calories burnt. Over the course of a year it would add up to about 30,000 extra calories, or around 8lb of fat.
"If you want to put that into activity levels," Dr Buckley says, "then that would be the equivalent of running about 10 marathons a year. Just by standing up three or four hours in your day at work."
Dr Buckley thinks that although going out and doing exercise offers many proven benefits, our bodies also need the constant, almost imperceptible increase in muscle activity that standing provides. Simple movement helps us to keep our all-important blood sugar under control.
We can't all stand up at work but the researchers believe that even small adjustments, like standing while talking on the phone, going over to talk to a colleague rather than sending an email, or simply taking the stairs, will help.

Raising concerns : 'Illegal cattle markets pose threat to citizens' health'

KARACHI: The Sindh High Court has admitted a petition seeking a ban on the establishment of illegal cattle markets in the city for hearing.
The bench headed by Justice Munib Akhtar directed the office to fix the plea on October 10 for passing an order.
Rana Faizul Hasan, a representative of the United Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, had taken the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and others to the high court over the growth of illegal cattle markets.
He said that the health department had recently asked the local administration to disallow establishment of the illegal cattle markets as a preventive measure to stop the deadly Congo virus from spreading in the city.
He added said that at a special meeting of the stakeholders, the in-charge of the provincial anti-dengue cell had sought a ban on mushrooming cattle markets in the city and advised the local government authorities to ensure proper fumigation in the cattle markets established at the officially designated places.
According to the petitioner, there are only five designated areas for setting up cattle markets – Super Highway, Malir 15, Cattle Colony, Manghopir and Mawachh Goth. “However, at least 150 cattle markets have been set up in multiple areas, including Shah Faisal Colony, Akhtar Colony, Banaras, Liaquatabad, Essa Nagri, Gulberg, Orangi Town, Landhi, FB Area, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, University Road, Safari Park and many other residential areas. These cattle markets run along the footpaths and main arteries, causing traffic gridlocks,” the petitioner claimed.
Rana argued that the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, local bodies department, police and other relevant authorities were responsible for the removal of illegal markets and should impose a ban under Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code.
He asked that the court order the authorities to immediately ban illegal cattle markets in the city to save citizens from the Congo virus. He also sought a direction for the officials to remove such markets at the earliest.

Pulling the shutters down: PDA shuts down 19 clinics in residential areas

Capital city police asked to assist administration in raids. PHOTO: FILE
PESHAWAR: The Peshawar Development Authority (PDA) on Monday closed 19 clinics in Hayatabad following the court’s orders to clamp down on commercial activities in residential areas of the city.
On September 25, the Peshawar High Court (PHC) ordered PDA to shut down all commercial buildings in residential areas of the city and also directed the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited and town administration to disconnect electricity, natural gas and water supply to these establishments.
“The owners were given notices immediately after the high court’s orders, but they did not abide by it,” said PDA Inspector Tariq Khan, adding the notices were followed by advertisements in the mainstream newspapers.
Capital city police was also asked to provide policemen to assist the administration in raids. Last Friday, the officials closed nine guest houses, also in the residential areas of Hayatabad, each stretching over more than 500 square yards. “We did not face resistance from any of the owners,” said Khan.
Three hundred such commercial buildings have been listed by the PDA. These include restaurants, offices, schools, health clinics among others. Their names, however, could not be acquired. PDA has also issued notices to schools to vacate the plots in different residential areas of the city including Warsak Road, University Town and Hayatabad – a move strongly opposed by school owners who consequently held news conferences to criticise the authorities. “So far, there is no plan to use force against them,” Khan clarified.
While such activities are not allowed in residential blocks, locals have also complained about the nuisance of having commercial buildings in the suburbs. This, however, is not a new occurrence. An operation was also carried out in August 2011, but they reopened soon after the raids ended.
Though appreciative of the efforts, locals expressed concern over the effectiveness of these operations. “Such actions have been taken before too. However, each time businesses start functioning again after a few days,” said Waheedullah, one of the locals, asking authorities to close down all such shops permanently.

KP to introduce law on breast feeding:?Yousafzai

PESHAWAR (APP): Minister for Health Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Shaukat Ali Yousafzai has revealed his government is \\\"introducing protection of breast feeding and child nutrition law\\\" in the province.
The cabinet of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will approve the draft already prepared for the purpose which will encourage breast feeding and discourage products in the province showing child feeding milk of multinational companies as better or substitute for breastfeeding.
He was addressing as a chief guest in a National Conference held at Islamabad regarding Breastfeeding Promotion and Protection under the \\\"Save the Children\\\" Program. The conference was attended by representatives of national and international organizations, social and political authorities, media representatives and various NGOs.
After getting approved from the cabinet the draft law will be tabled in the provincial assembly for enactment. Thereafter no doctor will prescribe or any multinational will portray their products as substitution or better products than the breast feeding.

While for nutrition activities, 20 million dollars have also been allocated to protect and control the death ratio of new born children. More than 2000 community midwives had been trained which would be deputed to the far flung areas of the province for primary healthcare.
Yousafzai said that religious scholars would also be invited to educate and highlight breastfeeding. A drive will be started at the level of villages, wards and union councils in this regard.

2 Foods Quietly Destroying Your Metabolism

Ever wondered how some people can eat practically anything and not put on a pound?
These people have an optimally functioning metabolism – one that assimilates foods efficiently, without storing ugly, stubborn belly fat.
Unfortunately though, according to the Center for Disease Control, the majority of the American Adult population is metabolically-challenged. 69.2% are overweight. 35.9% are considered medically obese1
The Real Reason the Majority of America is Overweight

According to Dr. Jonny Bowden, certified nutritionist and creator of the weight loss program Unleash Your Thin, one big reason the majority of America is overweight is because certain items in the food supply are silently destroying our metabolisms – forcing people to unknowingly pack on pound after pound of dangerous, unhealthy fat.
2 Foods That Destroy Your Metabolism
Just open your refrigerator and odds are you’ll find this one common, sickeningly sweet ingredient in almost every item: High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS).
Made from corn, the problem with this pervasive sweetener is, according to Dr Bowden,it is one of the most addictive foods you can consume. The damage done is immediate. It spikes your blood sugar unnaturally, forcing your body to secrete the fat-storing hormone insulin, which forces your body to pack on difficult-to-shed belly fat.
If you’re overweight and plagued by sugar cravings, chances are you’re addicted to HFCS. The good news is Dr. Bowden has a proven way to eliminate these cravings.
The second metabolism-destroying food is gluten. You’ll find it in all sorts of grain-based foods. As you’ve probably noticed, these foods are addictive, cause gluten sensitivity, pack on fat and create digestive problems. What’s the solution?
Unleash Your Thin

After attainingmultiple degrees and licenses in nutrition, health and psychology, as well as researchingover 150 diets, Dr. Bowden came to a controversial conclusion: Willpower is not the key factorin losing weight. It only reinforces the inevitable feelings of failure, having you pack on even more fat afterwards.
So if willpower doesn’t work, what does?
Based upon science andhundreds of thousands who’ve experienced significant fat loss, Dr. Bowden developed Unleash Your Thin – a breakthrough program that unleashes the power of foods to achieve dramatic fat loss as well as an abundance of energy, good health and beauty.
Unleash Your Thin quickly retrains your metabolism, flipping ON your ‘fat-burning furnace’. Dr. Bowden is so confident that you will see results, there’s even a 100% money-back guarantee: Start burning stubborn, ugly belly fat as soon as tomorrow or you don’t pay.
Dr. Jonny Bowden

What Dr. Bowden discovered is you don’t need willpower, fads, pills, surgery, or sprinkles to burn the fat easily. All you need is Unleash Your Thinto show you specifically what to delicious foods to eat. Dr. Bowden confidence in your success is obvious. He currently has a results-or-else special offer- a 60-day, money-back guarantee, allowing you to receive a full refund if you’re unsatisfied for any reason.

The secrets to reducing painful inflammation

Growing awareness about the causes and effects of inflammation has raised the dietary consciousness of many.  It’s been implicated as the culprit behind everything from acne to swollen joints, and even cancer and  heart disease. You can’t develop immunity to inflammation; there’s no vaccine. But there are ways to protect yourself.
Recommended diet and lifestyle changes to control inflammation include foods that are high in anti-oxidants:
  • fresh fruits and vegetables
  • fatty fish — rich in essential fatty acids; and
  • whole grains, like rice and oatmeal that are unprocessed, low in refined carbohydrates and without sugar.
Exercise is high on the list of life-style improvements that ease inflammation. The ideal amount? Not too much (which raises inflammation), but not too little. Target five days a week of steady exercise (brisk walking, swimming, biking) for 30 to 45 minutes.
A good night’s sleep is another important factor. Research shows that not enough sleep (less than six hours), or too much (more than eight hours) results in more inflammation. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine reports that most adults need between seven and eight hours of quality sleep a night.
Although symptoms can appear quickly, inflammatory conditions develop over time.  In addition to upgrading your diet and exercise habits – adding  recommended supplements can speed recovery and help protect against further damage.
One such supplement currently available is Nopalea, an all-natural formula derived from the Nopal cactus, or prickly pear, which has been used since ancient times for food and medicinal purposes.
Recent scientific research shows that the Nopal cactus is suggested to have potent anti-inflammatory properties, thanks to rare and powerful nutrients called betalains.  There are 24 known betalains in nature; some are found in beets and rainbow swiss chard, but Nopal cactus fruit is thought to contain the most concentrated amounts.
Now available for a free trial, Nopalea is a delicious, sugar and preservative-free anti-inflammatory wellness drink rich in betalains sourced from the Nopal.  It’s reported to have a variety of health benefits: Everything from reduced aches and pains to improvement in breathing and skin conditions.

Next-Gen Solution for Shocking Muscle Gains

One new supplement is revolutionizing the way pro athletes and bodybuilders achieve results.

Have you ever considered taking steroids to get the perfect body?
In recent years, media coverage exposing steroid use in professional sports has highlighted the widespread demand for that extra edge to build muscle, get stronger, and look better.

Steroids, although effective, are unhealthful and illegal to use without a prescription. Millions of dollars have been spent in sports medicine research to find a completely safe, natural alternative that produces the same results.
Years of research now suggest that nitric oxide supplements may maximize your muscle gains. In fact, the launch of one specific nitric oxide supplement called Force Factor in 2009 revolutionized the sports nutrition industry.

Today, the team behind Force Factor claims to have done it again – discovering a new nitric oxide pathway for even better workouts and even more dramatic results. The new product is called Factor 2 and is quickly gaining popularity with pro athletes and fitness enthusiasts.

Athletes like professional football player Vernon Davis, are just now discovering the dramatic benefits of using a nitric oxide supplement. Davis has been an advocate of Factor 2 since first taking it, telling his teammates in San Francisco, "Factor 2 has proven results. I believe in results."

The Science Behind Nitric Oxide
Your body naturally produces nitric oxide to move oxygen to your muscles while you exercise. This burst of oxygen keeps your muscles functioning while you lift weights or blast through your cardio sessions.

Unfortunately, your body can only generate a limited amount of nitric oxide. When the nitric oxide runs out, your muscles can no longer power through the exercise, no matter how much mental determination you have.

Taking a nitric oxide supplement 30 minutes before you work out could be the push your body needs to add weight to your bench press or run that extra mile. This increased stamina can result in longer, harder workouts and a healthier, stronger body in less time.

Suggested Benefits of Nitric Oxide Supplements
  • Drastic Muscle Gains
  • Increased Blood Flow and Oxygen Delivery
  • Boosted Strength, Endurance, and Power
  • Support for Your Immune System
  • Immediate Results
  • Total Body Transformation
Since its launch in 2009, Force Factor has enjoyed skyrocketing success, winning honors like GNC’s "Rising Star" award and Bodybuilding.com’s "Best New Brand" award while transforming the bodies of thousands of men and women throughout the U.S. Today, they’ve improved upon their original, groundbreaking formula and have released the most advanced nitric oxide supplement on the market: Factor 2.

According to the manufacturer, Factor 2 has set a new standard for nitric oxide supplements with a superior pathway to increasing your body’s level of nitric oxide naturally. With a heightened release, Factor 2 is suggested to provide a powerful workout experience and results that go above and beyond the competition. Professional basketball superstars, football players, and powerlifters have all said that Factor 2 works for them. Will you continue to struggle at the gym, or will you take this opportunity to finally make a change?

Rising case of measles in Pakistan

measles in Pakistan
All over Pakistan, there has been a rise in the numbers of traced measles cases over the last two months. Globally, almost 2,00,000 kids die every year from complications arising from measles. Doctors say that measles is an extremely contagious disease and if not treated in time, might result in serious life threatening medical complications. The disease is especially prevalent in malnourished children.
The symptoms of measles comprise rashes which appear 10-14 days after contact to the virus, and also cough, runny nose, and eye infections. In several regions of Pakistan including eastern Balochistan, where malnutrition rates are comparatively elevated, chances of complications are a bigger risk.
With the initiation on April 24 of World Immunisation Week, Pakistan has some discomforting statistics to share concerning the frequency of measles in the nation. Already up to this point in the year, about 25,400 cases of measles have been reported in the country, with Punjab leading having amid about 16,600 reported cases. Sindh has the highest number of deaths with 62 deaths reported so far, amongst 146 total deaths in all of Pakistan. There are fears that this is only the start of an ominous year as far as the measles outbreak is concerned.
While measles in kids is the primary concern, adults too can contract the disease in case they have not received proper vaccination. It is therefore of importance to possess complete information about past immunisation and their dates upon every visit to a doctor as a standard practice. In a developing nation such as Pakistan, this is a necessary measure to be taken. Controlling the outbreak of measles in both grown-up and teen populations is imperative to alleviate the spread of disease as the disease has already stretched outward from Sindh and into Punjab.
While presiding over a top level meeting on health in Karachi, Prime Minister Mir Hazar Khan Khoso expressed concern over the rising incidences of measles in the country and said that the epidemic should be tackled on a war footing. He also called for formulating long as well as short term measures to check the spread of the epidemic.
About 210 children died of measles in Sindh district alone last year in Pakistan. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the majority of the affected children died of post-measles complications like post measles encephalitis, pneumonia, and diarrhoea. Also another startling fact is that about one fifth of the children, who died of last year measles, were malnourished.

Top Overweight Countries Speak English

Overweight Countries
USA, Mexico, New Zealand, Australia, United Kingdom, Canada and Ireland are those countries that are famous for their overweight nations. They will have a high rate of obesity and you will find fattest people in these countries. Recently many scientists have started research on this issue that why English speaking countries have the fattest people. One of the researches they have come up with is that people who speak the same language have a great tendency of doing what their neighbor countries are doing. In this case, all of the countries follow USA. That is the reason why they also have fattest people in their country.
Even though Mexico is not an English Speaking country but still it also have the fattest people. The reason for that according to researchers can be NAFTA. They have recently signed the agreement NAFTA that is North America Free Trade. According to some, this can be a reason. There are many people wondering why we see the fattest people in these countries rather than any other country. The answer is simple. These English Speaking countries do not have a healthy life style.
English Speaking countries are living a fast life where they take in a lot of junk food too. This is the reason why there is great number of fattest people in these countries. They do not only have unhealthy diets but there daily routines are also not that impressive.  They are living on sterilized food. Areas, which have a great population, are mostly the city area. These areas have pollution and which in a way affects the health of the people.
English Speaking countries have very unhealthy practices too. Most of their children are not involved in any kind of physical activity. The reason for this is the computer games or other addictive indoor activities that they now have found more interesting. You will notice the fattest child of the family will be really into computer games. This culture was first common in USA only but all other English Speaking countries are following the same pattern.

Lizard Entered Into A Woman’s Body In Shekhupura

Lizard entered into a woman’s body in Shekhupura
Lizards are said to be among the creatures which are not only disliked by the human being but are extremely poisonous. The scientists say that most of the species of lizards contain harmful chemicals which can lead the animals to the stage of death. A lot of life killing lizards can be seen here and there in our houses or the buildings we visit at on a daily basis.
But an unfortunate incident amazed the people of Pakistan on 3rd September, 2013. A dangerous lizard happened to enter the body of a woman named as Farwa, when she was taking a deep sleep on 3rd September. What happened that Farwa was sleeping that night when an ill-looking lizard entered her mouth and then reached her stomach!
All of a sudden the poor lady started crying with the pain and her brother took her to the DHQ Hospital. But how can it happen that our doctors help and treat the patients at the point without asking them some strange questions? The same thing happened in this case as well. No doctor was present at the spot to treat the lady. At last an eye specialist D.r Zaheer Chaudary suggested them to have an ultrasound of the crying lady. But still the same thing, theultrasound department of the hospital was closed and there was no one to treat the patient.
Finally, Farwa’s brother decided to take her to a private clinic and he did it in no time.
Over there, the lady was treated properly and a lot of tests were taken to judge her sever condition. Still now Farwah is suffering from too much pain and restlessness. The incident remained in news for many years. The people belonging to different media channels blamed the DHQ Hospital doctors not to be present at their duties and neglecting their responsibility.
Is there any way that our doctors would realize their duties and how to pay keen attention to such emergency cases? I don’t think it is. But let’s see if Almighty shows up some miracle.

Dengue emergency declared in Swat

The mosquito-borne virus has killed 12 people in the valley since August 19. PHOTO: SHAHID ALI/EXPRESS
ISLAMABAD: Authorities in Swat Valley have declared a health emergency after nearly 5,000 cases of dengue fever were reported in a month.
The mosquito-borne virus has killed 12 people in the valley since August 19 and the number of patients is increasing every day, doctors said.
Dengue is spread by mosquitoes that breed in stagnant water and usually bite people during the daytime. It causes high fever, severe joint and muscle pains and can be fatal.
“So far 12 people have died due this disease and 4,934 persons have been tested positive, we have declared a health emergency in the district,” doctor Abdul Khaliq, district health officer in Swat told AFP by telephone.
Khaliq said the outbreak has been declared as an epidemic.
“It is becoming dangerous. Dengue larvae is everywhere, in and outside houses, in streets and all other places,” Khaliq said.
Officials said they believed infected larvae had been brought from Lahore in water in a consignment of old tyres.
An outbreak in Lahore in September 2011 killed 120 people and infected more than 1,200.
Hospitals in Mingora, the main town in Swat, are struggling to cope with the influx of patients, who complained of a lack of health facilities and basic medicines.
“We have not enough beds, no medicines and sometimes we go outside to have blood tests in private laboratories,” Hamid Khan, a relative of one patient, told AFP.
“My brother had fever and we are worried because the blood test was positive.”
There is no specific treatment for dengue but proper medical care for severe cases greatly reduces the risk of death, according to the World Health Organization.
Officials in Mingora’s main Saidu Sharif hospital said that a special 100-bed ward has been set up to deal with dengue cases.

Probe unearths sale of KTH blood to private clinics, other irregularities

PESHAWAR: Besides the sale of blood from the hospital’s blood bank to private

clinics, the Special Branch of the Police has unearthed other irregularities also at the

Khyber Teaching Hospital (KTH).

Copies of the investigation carried out by the Police Special Branch have been sent to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat and secretary health. One of its findings was that the staff of the blood bank, situated in the basement of the hospital, was involved in selling the blood to private clinics.

The reports was compiled after interviewing employees and observing the conditions at the hospital. It noted that the hospital has become a “major source of illegal income for a few corrupt officials causing huge financial losses to the hospital resources and the exchequer.”

It highlighted the unnecessary shops, restaurants, juice points and the ‘tandoor’ at the KTH run by people favoured by the hospital authorities. The report said that sophisticated machines like MRI machine were out-of-order when the investigation was conducted and the patients were being referred to private laboratories for tests in return for commission.

It noted that around 2,000 patients belonging to far-flung areas come to the hospital daily to the OPD of the hospital for treatment. A Police Special Branch official said millions of rupees had been spent on repairing the air-conditioning plant of the hospital but the patients and their attendants continued to suffer when it was out of order and during power outages.

“The hospital lacks own power plant or effective electricity generating system which adds to the suffering of ailing persons,” the report stated. The report termed conditions of almost all the wards, particularly the children ward, unsatisfactory, where three to four patients are accommodated on one bed, transferring infections from seriously sick children to normal kids, apparently for lack of space and growing number of patients.

It also stated that elevators were not functioning properly and sanitation arrangements in the wards were unsatisfactory. It added that toilets in the wards remain dirty. “Gynae ward and labour rooms are located on the second floor of the hospital due to which female patients (pregnant) face difficulties when going to the ward through stairs,” the report explained.

It said some doctors seldom visit the wards during the morning rounds. The report noted that sanitation staff only cleans main ways and corridors. It said the canteens run by private contractors overcharged patients and attendants.

The report said vehicle checking on both sides of the hospital and their parking was unsatisfactory. “The security system at the hospital premises is not up to the mark. Acts of terror may not be ruled out if the security system is not improved. Ward orderlies are also involved in monetary corruption/taking money from the patients for providing them wheelchairs and allowing attendants to meet their patients,” it said.It said the irregularities were earning a bad name for the newly installed PTI government because for a layman a good hospital means a good government.

Fumigation drive in Swat from today to curb dengue

MINGORA, Aug 25: Keeping in view the increasing number of dengue patients in Swat, the authorities have decided to launch a fumigation drive in the district from Monday (today).
Provincial Health Secretary Dr Fakhar Alam, who visited the district on Sunday, directed the deputy commissioner and district health officer to take preventive measures against dengue.
He said that health department would provide three more vehicles mounted with fumigation machines to the district administration to start the drive from Monday.
The health secretary also visited Saidu Sharif hospital and enquired after the health of dengue patients.
The patients informed him about the shortage of beds, non-availability of electricity and cleanliness situation at the hospital.
The secretary directed the hospital administration to resolve all the problems faced by the patients.
He said that provincial government would provide necessary assistance to the hospital administration.
Meanwhile, the number of dengue patients in the district reached to 250 as several more were tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease here on Sunday.
The dengue patients also included 45 women, Dr Taj Mohammad Khan, the chief executive of Saidu Group of Teaching Hospitals, told Dawn.
He said that at least 80 patients were discharged from the hospital after completion of their treatment.
The residents of different areas of the district were visiting Saidu Sharif hospital in a large number to test themselves for dengue since the outbreak of the disease in Swat, said hospital sources.
“We received hundreds of fever patients yesterday an out of them 50 more tested positive for dengue,” said Ijaz, an official at the hospital. He said that keeping in view increase in the number of dengue positive cases, the hospital administration had specified Medical-A Ward for dengue patients while Medical-B Ward had already been declared as dengue emergency unit.
Mr Ijaz said that they had enough medicines and kits for screening test of dengue patients.
The patients, who were kept in open and at the corridor of Medical-B Ward, were shifted on Sunday to Medical-A Ward, said an official. He added that they had resolved the problem of shortage of beds at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Peshawar Commissioner Sahibzada Anees has ordered the teaching hospitals to designate beds for suspected patients and make sure that all drugs required by dengue affected patients be provided free of cost.
