PESHAWAR: The Peshawar High Court (PHC) on Wednesday directed local elders to help recover kidnapped vice chancellor of Islamia College University (ICU) Ajmal Khan and disposed of the case of the eight previously abducted Gomal Zam Dam workers.
A two-member bench comprising PHC Chief Justice Dost Muhammad Khan and Justice Nisar Hussain Khan ordered the registrar to make a separate file for the case of Muhammad Mushtaq, the Frontier Works Organisation employee who was part of the eight abductees, but was not released on September 14 with the seven others. The application was filed by his mother who was referred to by the Human Rights Directorate.
On August 15, 2012, TTP abducted eight men including Wapda and Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) employees on their way to DI Khan from South Waziristan for Eid holidays.
Counsel for Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda), Fida Gul, informed the court seven of the eight men reached their respective homes safely after the intervention of the high court and the struggle of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Governor Shaukatullah Khan. Elders of the area took keen interest in the issue and played a vital role in their recovery, added Gul.
Senator Muhammad Salih Shah who was present at the PHC with other elected representatives told the bench tribal elders had served their land in difficult times, but their jirga system has now weakened.
The bench went on to urge elected representatives from North and South Waziristan agencies to play their due role in the safe recovery of ICU’s vice chancellor (VC) Ajmal Khan.
The court issued notices to both federal and provincial governments to explain why the recovery of the kidnapped VC could not be possible so far and what have they done to recover him.
